Dragon Ball Z the Movie: Dead Zone, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Ora no Gohan o Kaese!! (ドラゴンボールゼット オラの悟飯を返せッ!!, Doragon Bōru Zetto Ora no Gohan o Kaese!!?, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: Return my Gohan!!") and originally simply titled Dragon Ball Z, is the first movie in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. (It was preceded by three Dragon Ball movies.) It was originally released in Japan on July 15, 1989, between episodes 11 and 12. It was translated in America by FUNimation's and Bridge Entertainment's title is The Pursuit of Garlic.
The movie was originally released in America on VHS and DVD in 1997. The English dub was a joint venture between Pioneer (now Geneon) Entertainment and FUNimation Entertainment. The dub used the Ocean Group (who also did the voices for the first two seasons of DBZ) and it featured dialogue accurate to the Japanese version and had the original Japanese background music. In 2005, the film was re-released as part of FUNimation's Ultimate Uncut Editions due to Geneon losing the distribution rights for seasons 1 and 2 of DBZ and the first three DBZ movies. The new dub featured FUNimation's voice actors, dialogue that is not quite as accurate of a translation as that on the Pioneer release and a new soundtrack replacing the original japanese soundtrack. In addition, the missing episodes of Dragonball Z featured on the Pioneer release were cut from the Funimation re-release.
This movie, along with The World's Strongest and The Tree of Might, was released in a DVD box set labeled "First Strike" from FUNimation on November 14, 2006.
